Is a junior account or child savings account halal?

By Mehdi, Senior Sukuk Fund Manager · Updated May 2026

Parents often assume a children's product is automatically wholesome. The ruling does not soften just because the account holder is small — so let me be clear.

The short answer: If the account pays interest, it carries the same riba problem as an adult savings account — opening it in a child's name does not change that. The clean choices are an interest-free or Islamic children's account for cash, or a screened halal junior investment for long-term growth.

A standard junior savings account or cash junior-ISA-style product that pays interest is paying your child riba, plain and simple. The fix mirrors the adult case: for cash you want kept safe, use an interest-free or Islamic children's account; for money you want to actually grow over their childhood, a screened halal junior investment is far better suited, since the long time horizon rewards investing over saving. If you are holding an interest-bearing one now, the interest earned is not theirs to keep and should be purified.

Where we stand: do not let the "it's for the kids" framing wave riba through. Choose the clean version — and given how long the money has to grow, lean toward screened investment over a cash account wherever you can.

What we feed our children's wealth with matters as much as what we feed their bodies with. Starting their savings clean, from the very first pound, is a small act of tarbiyah — raising them inside barakah rather than riba.
