What is a time horizon, and why does it change everything?

By Mehdi, Senior Sukuk Fund Manager · Updated May 2026

If I could make people internalise just one investing concept, it might be this one, because so much flows from it. Let me show you why it changes everything.

The short answer: Your time horizon is simply how long until you need the money. It is arguably the single most important input in investing, because time changes what risk even means — money you will not touch for twenty years can ride out storms that would be a disaster for money you need next year.

Time transforms risk. Over a single year, the stock market can swing wildly — a terrible year can hurt badly. But over fifteen or twenty years, those swings have historically smoothed into growth, because you had time to ride through the bad seasons and let the good ones compound. So the same volatile asset is genuinely risky for short-term money and reasonable for long-term money — nothing changed about the asset, only your horizon. This is why money you need soon belongs somewhere stable, while money for the distant future can afford to grow through turbulence.

Where we stand: we treat your horizon as a primary driver of your whole strategy. Long-horizon money can be invested for growth and left to compound and weather storms; near-term money should be protected, not exposed. Matching each pot of money to its real timeline is one of the most powerful, and most overlooked, moves in honest investing.

There is a deeper horizon worth keeping in view: the longest one of all, stretching past this life entirely. The believer who invests with patience for the distant future is practising, in miniature, the same long view that the whole deen asks of us — sacrificing the impulse of now for the reward of later.
