What is an asset class?

By Mehdi, Senior Sukuk Fund Manager · Updated May 2026

Before you can build anything, you need to know your materials. Asset classes are the materials of investing, so let me lay them out plainly.

The short answer: An asset class is simply a family of investments that share similar characteristics and tend to behave in similar ways — like shares, Sukuk, gold, property, and cash. They are the basic building blocks you combine to make a portfolio.

Think of asset classes as different families of investment, each with its own personality. Shares (equities) are ownership of businesses — higher growth, bumpier ride. Sukuk are the Islamic alternative to bonds — steadier, asset-backed income. Gold is a timeless store of value that often holds firm when others wobble. Property generates rent and tends to move on its own cycle. Cash is stable and instantly available but loses value to inflation over time. Each family behaves differently, which is exactly why you hold several.

Where we stand: this is the foundation of how we build. We work with six halal asset classes — screened equities, Sukuk, gold, property/REITs, cash, and Bitcoin (held with caution) — combining them so that when one family struggles, another can hold the line. Understanding the families is step one; weighting them for who you are, and for the season, is the craft the curriculum goes deep on.

There is a reflection of divine wisdom even here: diversity and balance run through all of creation, and a wisely-balanced portfolio echoes that order — no single thing carrying the whole weight, each playing its part.
